July Garden Guide

Whether you love the cosy atmosphere of winter or it’s not your favourite season, one thing we can all agree on is that winter’s beauty shines even brighter when paired with the brilliance of winter-growing, spring-blooming bulbs. You might even spot a few already popping up, adding a much-needed splash of colour to your garden. Here's our July Garden Guide.

Winter Bulbs in Bloom

Winter bulbs are glorious geophytes (rhizomes, tubers, corms, tuberous roots, and true bulbs) that begin to grow in response to the drop in temperature. Incredible, isn’t it? This marvellous cycle of growth is enough to inspire you through the winter months, especially if the season makes you feel like going into your own dormancy.

Here are the winter bulbs that are first to brighten the cold days with their vibrant blossoms.

  • Anemone

  • Babiana

  • Cyclamen

  • Daffodils

  • Hyacinthoides

  • Hyacinth

  • Kniphofia

  • Tulbaghia

  • Waterblommetjie

Bulb tip : remember to feed your plants after flowering. This ensures that the bulb takes in the necessary nutrients during the growth cycle that will be stored for the following season’s blooms.

How to Make Plastic-Free July Count

Here are some simple ways to make a difference this Plastic-Free July and inspire you to rethink the use of plastic in your gardening space:

  • Plant in terracotta pots instead of plastic.

  • Repurpose any plastic pots you already have.

  • Use biodegradable twine instead of plastic ties.

  • Swap plastic seedling trays for biodegradable pots.

  • Take a reusable bag when buying garden supplies from your local nursery or garden centre.

Remember to focus on progress, not perfection. Small changes can also make a real difference.

Are your hands itching to get planting? We think its a good idea to keep your hands warm with planting out these fabulous bulbs. Get your gardening gloves ready for handling these beauts.

Another way of helping our planet / landfill . . . . . .
Use old plastic seed trays as drainage instead of stones at the bottom of your pots – put them on the ground and stomp them flat, then stuff them in your pots before filling them. Does the same job, lets the water out without the potting soil and it’s a LOT lighter than stones.
Another thing I also use, especially in large pots, is all the sheets of polystyrene that comes with so many purchases these days, break them up into smaller pieces and fill the bottom of your pots as another form of drainage. Every little bit counts.
