Why You Won't See Tulips This Year

We know that so many of our customers look forward to planting tulips every autumn, but unfortunately, we won’t be stocking these delightful bulbs this year.

The reason? The worldwide tulip industry has suffered severe crop losses for the past two growing seasons, due to adverse weather conditions across the globe.

Worldwide production occurs mostly in the Netherlands, which saw a 50% crop return this past season. Prices have doubled for next season. But our supply does not come from Holland, and our predicament in South Africa is even more serious.

Tulip bulbs for garden use in South Africa must be sourced from southern hemisphere growers for successful flowering. Southern hemisphere production is extremely limited, and we are unable to secure supply for this coming season.

Hadeco stopped producing tulips in 2018 and even well before that final year of production, we had set about finding and growing a range of bulbs that could be enjoyed in the place of tulips.  We believe we have succeeded in developing a range that is not only beautiful to grow at home, but indeed offers better performance and in many cases, will reward the casual gardener with repeat performances every season. Please explore the alternatives and find joy in discovering something new 🌷
