Dahlia Care Tips for Winter Dormancy
Dahlias are beautiful, bold, breathtakingβand totally worth their big reputation. Now that it is winter though it is only natural that even the showiest blooms need a little R&R. Hereβs how to care for your dahlias during their dormant season so they can bounce back better than ever next year and reward you with an overflow of spectacular blooms (provided you have cared for them well and fed them after flowering of course). Here's yourΒ Dahlia Care Tips for Winter Dormancy.
First Things First: Can You Leave Them In the Ground?
Good news! If you live in most parts of South Africa, your dahlias can stay right where they are over winter. The climateβs kind enoughβas long as:
The soil drains well (they hate soggy feet).
You donβt get severe frostsβbeing that theyβre from the wonderfully warm land of Mexico, they hate being cold even more.Β
You mulch them with compost.Β
Β Mild frost?Β Β No problem.
Β Frozen soil?Β Β That's when you'll need to step in and do some lifting.Β
Lifting Tubers β The Ultimate Retreat
If your garden does experience frosty tantrums, it's safer toΒ Β lift your dahlia tubersΒ Β for the winter.
When?
Do itΒ Β at the start of winterΒ , once the plant has stopped flowering, the leaves look like they have seen much better days and basically when they have weathered away.Β
How?
Cut the stems down toΒ Β about 5 cm above the groundΒ .
Grab aΒ Β garden forkΒ Β and gently lift the tubers.
Β Shake off the soilΒ .Β
If you see any damaged tubers,Β Β tear them away from the crownΒ Β (thatβs the old stem part).
Dust and Dry your DahliaΒ
Now that youβve got them out:
Β Dust them with fungicideΒ Β to prevent nasty moulds.
Let any cuts or damageΒ Β dry in a shady, airy placeΒ . Not in the sunβsunbathing isΒ soΒ last season.
Β Donβt wash them.Β Β This isnβt a bubble bath; too much water = rot.
Name That Tuber!
Before you forget whoβs who:
Β Label each tuberΒ Β with their variety name.
Tie a tag around the stem (or the βneckβ).
Donβt rely on memoryβtrust us, next spring all tubers look the same.
Storage: Keeping Tubers Happy Through Winter
Once theyβre dry and labelled, packΒ them carefullyΒ Β into a box (cardboard works great).
-
Surround each tuber with something dry and comfy like:
Sawdust
Vermiculite
Shredded newspaper
Sand
Wood shavings
-
Store the box somewhere:
DarkΒ
DryΒ
Frost-freeΒ
Not warmer than 20Β°CΒ
Think of it as a quiet holiday cottage for tubers. No parties. Just peace and chill for four months before their rave growth cycle comes late spring.Β
Propagation: Splitting the Growth
Want more dahlias? (Silly questionβof course you do.)
Once you lift and clean your tubers, look for big, bulky crowns. You can divide them:
Make sure each piece has at least one old stem.
Youβll see little βeyesβ (tiny growth points). These are next seasonβs shoots. Donβt poke them!
Leave a few tubers on each split so they have energy to grow.
Dust them with fungicide again, and store just like you would whole ones.
Uninvited Guests: Pests and Problems
Dahlias, like all celebrities, attract pests:
Β Aphids and thripsΒ Β are the main culprits. They carry viruses like tiny flying syringes. Ew.
If a plant looksΒ Β mottled, stunted or weirdly curledΒ , it might be infected. Best toΒ Β discardΒ Β those plants to protect the rest.
During their full growth spurt, dahlias are mostly tough cookies. However, near the end of the season,Β Β fungus might show upΒ , especially if itβs humid and air circulation is poor.
Thin the lower leaves toΒ Β let them breatheΒ .
If things look seriously fluffy or fuzzy, go ahead andΒ Β sprayΒ Β with a fungicide.
Don't panic about late-season mouldβitβs like the end of a costume party. The foliage was leaving anyway.
In Summary
Leave them in the ground if your winters are mild.
Β Lift and storeΒ Β if it gets frosty or soggy.
AlwaysΒ Β labelΒ ,Β Β dustΒ ,Β Β dryΒ , andΒ Β storeΒ Β in something dry and breathable.
Β Split big clumpsΒ Β for more plants, but be kind to the βeyesβ.
Β Treat pests earlyΒ Β and donβt tolerate viruses.
